Knuckle boom vs straight boom — does it affect value?

Yes — the type of boom affects both the buyer pool and the offer:

Knuckle (articulating) boom
Wider buyer demand — preferred for construction and maintenance work where horizontal reach and obstacle navigation are required. More versatile = more buyers = stronger market.

Straight (telescopic) boom
Specialist buyer pool — valued for height reach and outdoor use. Large telescopic booms (18m+) attract infrastructure and civil construction buyers.

Trailer-mounted boom
Niche market — valued by hire companies and contractors who need portable access without a dedicated vehicle. Lower volume but a committed buyer pool.

Self-propelled (4WD diesel)
Strong demand in construction — outdoor rough terrain models in good condition sell well. Working height and platform capacity are the key value drivers.

What affects your boom lift valuation?

Working height
Height is the primary specification buyers compare. Clearly state the maximum working height in metres.

Hours on the machine
Under 2,500 hours is considered low for a boom lift. Machines with 4,000+ hours can still sell well with good condition and compliance.

Compliance and 10-year inspection
Boom lifts used in Australia require certification under AS1418.10. Current compliance with documentation is a strong value driver.

Condition
Platform condition, boom paint, tyre tread and overall presentation all affect offer value.

Drive — electric, diesel or hybrid
Electric boom lifts have growing demand as worksites favour indoor-capable, emissions-free machines. Diesel retains strong demand for outdoor construction.

High risk work licence requirement
Boom lifts over 11m require a High Risk Work Licence in most states. This affects the buyer pool — factor it in when describing the machine.

Condition and Presentation
Full respray, clean cabin, serviced and detailed machines receive stronger offers than unserviced machines.

Should I do a Major Inspection before selling?

This is the most common question YG receives from telehandler owners. The honest answer: it depends on the machine's age and how close it is to the 10-year threshold.

Machine Approaching 10-Year Inspection

If your boom lift is within 12 months of its 10-year major inspection, completing the inspection before sale typically returns more value than the cost. A fully compliant machine with fresh documentation sells faster and for a higher price. YG can carry out the inspection and purchase the machine in a single transaction.

Machine with several years of compliance remaining

If the machine is compliant for several more years, an inspection before sale is generally not necessary. The compliance certificate is your selling point - make sure it is current and documented.
Non-Compliant Machine

YG still buys non-compliant boom lifts. Our offer will reflect the cost of bringing the machine into compliance, but you avoid the effort and delay of managing that yourself.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is my boom lift worth?

Used boom lift values in Australia depend on type, height, hours and condition. A 2018 Genie Z-45/25J knuckle boom in good condition with current compliance typically ranges from $35,000 to $55,000. Larger straight booms (20m+) can reach $80,000+. Get a free written valuation from YG within 24 hours.

Is my boom lift still called an EWP?

Yes — boom lift is the common buyer search term and the specific type name. EWP (Elevated Work Platform) is the compliance category that includes both boom lifts and scissor lifts. When selling, use the specific term: knuckle boom lift, telescopic boom lift or cherry picker, as these are what buyers search for.

Does a boom lift need a High Risk Work Licence to operate?

In most Australian states and territories, boom lifts over 11 metres in working height require a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate. This does not affect the sale process but is worth noting for buyers who enquire about operator requirements.

Do you buy trailer-mounted boom lifts?

Yes. Trailer-mounted booms are a niche product and we assess them case by case based on age, condition, certification and working height.
